NEWS CENTER- 111 people, including writers, intellectuals and artists, make a statement and want the demands of Nuriye Gülmen and Semih Özakça, who are on hunger strike for 111 days to be met.
Academic Nuriye Gülmen and teacher Semih Özakça was dismissed by decrees issued under state of emergency declared in Turkey after the July 15, 2016, coup attempt. As Nuriye and Semih have been on hunger strike for 111 days, 111 people, including writers, intellectuals and artists like Ayşe Kulin, Hale Soygazi, Zuhal Olcay, Müjde Ar, Sebahat Akkiraz, Sevinç Erbulak, Tilbe Saran, Zeynep Tanbay, Latife Tekin, Meltem Cumbul and Pelin Batu made a joint statement for the demands of Nuriye and Semih to be met. “Don’t let Nuriye and Semih to die. Their right to work should be given them again. We demand the state to take necessary steps,” says the statement.
The statement continues as follows: “Nuriye Gülmen and Semih Özakça are just two persons from 5,000 academics and 50,000 teachers, who were dismissed by emergency decrees. They were arrested because they go on a hunger strike to be reinstated. They are hungry for 111 days.”
